🌱 it took me 3 years to buy a pair of boots
Shopping observations
- I like buying clothing and accessories in person. Nothing beats trying on an outfit in person
discovery/serendipity
Even before I ditched Instagram and Facebook, I was already tuning my feeds to focus on content that I was interested in by managing my follows. But, I feel like that was reducing the possibility for chance discoveries that I could really enjoy.
When I was working at Pinterest, one of the first things we learnt about was the customer journey, the path that you as a customer take from identifying something you want (awareness) to the point of purchase (conversion).
As a discovery-first platform, it made sense that although users may find ideas on Pinterest, they weren't necessarily going to buy right away. They'd switch between online and offline channels to help consider the benefits and options before making that purchasing decision. Working in marketing, the goal is to move the customers along the journey at each point to help them decide to purchase.
Consider the different touchpoints with a brand:
-
Search engine: usually the last touchpoint before I land on the website and make a purchase online.
-
Social media (organic):
-
Social media (following):
-
Social media (ad):
-
Physical store:
That search engines failed to even help me find what I want. I wish there was a directory of stores that collates all the data, brands, prices, materials, even show loyalty that could manage it all. Or maybe a new layout for e-commerce sites that encourage browsing. Like bring back the window shopping experience.
